In GABN, New Pastors

In September, GABN welcomed five new pastors and church planters into our network: Mandy Fernandez of the Rock Church, Matt Dye of M28, Kevin Cuthbertson of First Baptist Chattahoochee, Chad Williams of HighView Church and Jongill Lee of Logos Mission.

Here is our interview with Matt Dye, Planting Pastor of M28 Church in Atlanta.

Q –  Why Atlanta?

A – As my wife and I were praying over what city the Lord may be leading us to move to and plant, I kept asking the Lord to make it clear to me through people I met where we should go. After researching and praying over multiple cities (Philadelphia, Toronto, Denver), and marking Atlanta off of my list because I assumed it was the “Bible Belt,” it was recommended that I speak with Jim Haskell (then with Urban Atlanta Church Planting). After a phone conversation he asked me to drive to Atlanta so he could share with me the spiritual condition of the city.

I desired an urban context and I was shocked by the lack of churches and the great need inside the perimeter (ITP). I have found many large church buildings ITP, but many of them are virtually empty each week. The population continues to grow ITP, but the church has not kept up with the population at all. Therefore, my wife and I became burdened to move to Atlanta and plant a church.

Q – What can you tell us about your church?

A – M28 Church is being planted in Midtown on the Westside. M28 Church will be a NT Church that desires to make disciples of all people entrusted to us by the Lord. We also are praying that the Lord will allow us to really become effective in reaching into multi-housing communities, since a large percentage of people in our area live in apartments, condos and townhomes.

Q – Why GABN?

A – I am thankful for the model that GABN is using and feel it is more effective in our day. The focus on church planting and commitment to Scripture was very appealing to us as a church. We look forward to partnering with other member churches to reach our city, country, and the nations.

Q –  How did you come to Christ?

A – I was raised in a “Christian home,” but the Gospel was never really discussed on a regular basis. It became clear to me during the first year of my marriage that I didn’t know why I told people I was a Christian. Therefore, I did something I had never really done before: I began to read the Bible. It was during this time (about 18 years ago), that I truly began to understand who Jesus was and the need I had for Him as my Savior. It was during this time that I believe I was redeemed and born again. My life has never been the same since I started reading the Bible all those years ago!

Q – What led you into pastoral ministry?

A – The Lord allowed me to have great opportunities of teaching, discipling, and leading in the local church we were serving. During this time, it became clear to me and those around me that it was time for me to prepare for ministry, so I began to attend The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. After my first year in seminary I was called to pastor Dallasburg Baptist Church and was their senior pastor for 8 ½ years until I resigned to move to Atlanta to plant M28 Church.

Q – What can you tell us about your family?

A – My wife Teresa and I have been married for 19 years. We have four children: Faith (13), Caleb (11), Joshua (7), and Daniel (6). Our two youngest children are adopted from Ethiopia. I love my family and the Lord has greatly blessed my wife and I by allowing us to enjoy 19 years of marriage. I am grateful for her and my children.

Q – How can we be praying for you?

A – Pray for the people of Midtown, Atlanta, and those He leads us to partner with as we desire to be faithful to Scripture.

Pray for our core team and that we would continue to grow in unity and faithfulness.

Pray as we invite neighbors and friends into our home to grow intentional relationships.

Pray for more partner churches to join us in prayer, support, and encouragement.
